Nestled on 14 acres of tropical jungle in Costa Rica’s Southern Pacific, this eco luxury retreat center was conceived from its earliest blueprints as a place that takes from the land as little as possible and gives back as much as it can.

Designed by the Land, for the Land

Mandala was designed by its founder, Lee, whose background in permaculture design and over 25 years of experience in LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and sustainable building practices shaped every decision from where the buildings sit on the hillside to what they are made of.

The architecture begins with passive solar design. Buildings are oriented to minimize direct heat exposure, with large roof overhangs to reduce solar gain and strategic placement to maximize natural airflow. The result? Spaces that breathe, stay cool without mechanical intervention, and feel deeply connected to their surroundings.

The eco luxury villas go further. Using a technique known as ‘berming’, the structures are partially embedded into the hillside, drawing on the earth’s own geothermal stability to regulate indoor temperatures. Less energy demand = less environmental impact. And an almost imperceptible integration into the landscape that makes each villa feel grown from the land rather than placed upon it.

Natural Materials, Lasting Design

Every material at Mandala was chosen with intention for environmental performance, beauty, and longevity.

The villas are built from concrete and high-quality insulation selected for durability in a tropical climate, designed to last rather than be replaced. Roofs are finished with an artificial thatch system made from recycled materials with an approximate 30-year lifespan, offering the organic warmth of traditional thatch without the ecological cost of frequent replacement.

Floors and walls throughout the property feature microcement: a modern adaptation of ancient Roman lime-based finishes, refined over centuries in Spain and Italy. Seamless, natural, and enduring, it requires only simple cleaning rather than repainting, reducing material use over time.

Wood furniture and art installations throughout the property were designed in-house and handcrafted by local Costa Rican artisans, supporting the regional economy while creating unique, site-specific pieces that could only exist here.

Bamboo Architecture: Beauty With Roots

Among the most striking elements of Mandala’s design are its two signature open-air yoga shalas, Vista Shala and Mandala Shala, both created in collaboration with acclaimed bamboo architect James Wolf, recipient of the Architecture MasterPrize in 2021 for his work with the Green School in Bali.

Bamboo was selected for its performance as much as its presence. It is one of the most rapidly renewable materials on earth: strong, flexible, and capable of creating open-air structures that dissolve the boundary between interior space and jungle. At Mandala, these shalas are a statement of what building in harmony with nature actually looks like.

Solar and True Energy Independence

Mandala currently operates 26 solar panels generating approximately 5,200 watts of power, with plans for continued expansion. Each villa is equipped with its own stand-alone solar hot water system. Energy is stored using high-efficiency Pytes batteries combined with Sol-Ark inverters, providing reliable redundancy and genuine energy independence.

The sun, the land, and a well-designed system do the work.

Chemical-Free, From Garden to Guest Room

For over six years, Mandala has operated as a fully organic property:  no chemical fertilizers, no pesticides, no herbicides.

Land management is guided by permaculture principles: the ‘chop and drop’ technique returns organic material directly to the soil; an Aeromatico composting system creates nutrient-rich compost tea from organic waste, applied throughout the property to nourish indigenous, ornamental, and edible plants. The soil is fed, the ecosystem is strengthened, and the cycle is kept intact.

This philosophy also extends indoors. Cleaning throughout the property is done primarily with natural solutions (vinegar based and carefully selected) with minimal, consciously chosen use in the laundry facility.

In guest rooms, personal care products including shampoo, conditioner, and body wash are locally made and supplied in refillable dispensers, eliminating single-use plastic entirely. The products guests find in their villas are as thoughtfully sourced as everything else on the property.

Protecting the Land: A Wildlife Corridor That Thrives

Mandala sits on land in Ojochal that was once cattle pasture. Since development began, over 500 trees and shrubs have been planted to restore the natural environment. Approximately 50 percent of the property is permanently preserved as a rainforest reserve and wildlife corridor. The land is protected from development forever. 

A year-round stream runs through this protected area, supporting an abundance of wildlife that includes howler monkeys, big cats native to the region, iguanas, toucans, and scarlet macaws. Guests who walk the land are entering a living corridor that connects ecosystems and supports the movement of species across the region.

This is land stewardship in its most direct form: the decision to leave something alone, to protect it permanently, and to let it be what it was always meant to be.

Minimalism as Ecological Practice

Mandala’s design aesthetic is minimalist, an ecological choice as much as a visual one. Open, uncluttered spaces allow nature itself to fill the room. There is nothing competing with the view, the sound of the stream, the quality of the light. Guests are given space to be present because the design asks nothing unnecessary of them.

This same principle governs the property’s operational footprint: choose durable materials over disposable ones, natural solutions over chemical ones, restoration over extraction. Take only what is needed and leave the rest.
